The Backyard Retreat
What began as a fix for major drainage issues grew into a complete backyard transformation. By removing huge concrete planters, uneven pathways, a leaning tree and a small deck infested with carpenter bees, the space opened to the surrounding landscape — revealing a new view of Chief Peak and creating room to relax, gather, and play.
A larger deck built from recycled materials now anchors the garden, paired with updated lighting, a hot tub, and comfortable furnishings for everyday outdoor living. Existing materials were thoughtfully reused throughout the design. Large terracotta pots were repurposed, natural stepping stones were kept and integrated into the new layout, and even the new, smaller raised garden beds were built using salvaged stone from the property.
The homeowners were very interested in using all California native plants in the new garden; looking forward to a low maintenance and eco-friendly design. Even though much of their yard is mostly shaded and many plants had to be planted in pots instead of the ground we were able to select a vibrant palette of California native plants to bring year-round interest and seasonal blooms, all while supporting local wildlife and pollinators.
The result is a backyard designed for everyday living and enjoying the beauty of Ojai.
