Family Friendly Backyard Oasis

What began as a much needed solution to serious drainage issues became a full-scale transformation of this underused backyard. The original space had a layout that felt closed off and awkward, uneven concrete pathways, and lacked areas where the kids could play and the parents could relax. While addressing water issues and damage to the house were top priorities, we also saw an opportunity to reimagine their entire yard.

The homeowners were very interested in using all California native plants in the new garden; looking forward to a low maintenance and eco-friendly design. Even though much of their yard is mostly shaded and many plants had to be planted in pots instead of the ground we were able to select a vibrant palette of California native plants to bring year-round interest and seasonal blooms, all while supporting local wildlife and pollinators.

Existing materials were thoughtfully reused throughout the design. Large terracotta pots were repurposed, natural stepping stones were integrated into the new layout, and even the raised garden beds were rebuilt using salvaged stone from the property.

The result is a welcoming, open space full of life and color — inviting the family and their friends to enjoy and connect with their outdoor space every day.
